Fun fact that is also a little bit of a metaphor: real flamingos fade too. Their pink comes from pigments in what they eat, and a flamingo without the right diet slowly goes pale. Plastic flamingos have the opposite problem. They come out of the box fully pink and the sun spends every day taking it away.
You cannot stop it entirely, especially in Florida, but you can slow it down a lot, mostly by buying the right bird and storing it sensibly. Here is how.
What the sun actually does
UV light breaks down pigment. Ultraviolet light breaks down the color in plastic and paint over time. Pinks and reds are among the shades that show it most, which is unfortunate for an object whose whole personality is pink.
It breaks down the plastic, too. The same exposure degrades the surface of the plastic itself. That is the chalky, powdery feel an old bird gets, and eventually the brittleness that makes a faded flamingo crack when you pull it out of the ground.
Heat speeds it up. A bird in full afternoon sun on a south-facing Florida lawn is in about the harshest spot it could be. The same bird on a shaded porch can look new for years.
What to look for before you buy
UV-resistant or UV-stabilized plastic. If a listing says it, that is a real advantage; if it does not, assume it is not. This is the single most useful phrase to search for in a product description.
Color molded through, not just painted on. Birds made of colored plastic fade evenly and gently. Painted birds can look brighter at first, but paint can peel and flake, which looks much worse than an even fade.
Thicker walls. Cheap bulk birds are thin, and thin plastic gets brittle faster. They are perfect for a weekend flocking and less ideal for a permanent spot in the sun. Read the reviews for mentions of how the birds held up after a season.
Other materials. If fading drives you crazy, skip plastic for the sunniest spot. Painted or powder-coated metal and sealed resin statues hold color differently, and a stepping stone lies flat where it gets less direct exposure.
How to keep a flock pink longer
Give them some afternoon shade. Morning sun and afternoon shade is the sweet spot. Planting among shrubs, near a fence, or on the shady side of the house can add years.
Rotate. If you have a big flock, swap birds between the sunny spots and the shaded ones every few months so they fade together instead of one turning ghostly.
Store them for the off-season. Indoors and out of the sun is the best thing you can do for a plastic bird. Seasonal flamingos (the Santa-hat crew) last far longer than year-round ones for exactly this reason.
Keep them clean. A rinse with mild soap and water removes the grime that makes faded birds look even worse. Skip harsh cleaners and scrub brushes, which rough up already-weathered plastic.
What to do with a faded flamingo
Embrace it. A sun-bleached, pale-pink bird has a look of its own. It says this flamingo has been standing guard through a lot of summers. Some people prefer it to fresh hot pink.
Repaint it. Clean the bird, let it dry, and use a spray paint made to bond with plastic. Light coats, then a clear UV-resistant topcoat. It is a weekend project and the bird comes back nearly new.
Retire it with honor. When a bird turns brittle and starts cracking, it is done. Replace it, and use this guide to pick the next one. If the legs are the only problem, new legs are cheaper than a new bird.

Metal Flamingo Garden Statue
Metal does not fade like plastic. Touch up chipped paint so it does not rust near the coast.
Before you buy: Look at the finish (powder-coated or painted), the stake design, and the weight. Metal does not fade like plastic, but chipped paint on steel can rust near the coast, so a touch-up every season helps.

Life-Size Flamingo Statue
Resin and fiberglass statues are usually sealed. Check the listing for a UV-resistant finish.
Before you buy: Confirm the real height and base footprint, the material, and how it anchors. Big statues catch wind and are tempting to borrow, so plan to bolt, weight, or bring it in.

The Classic Yard Icon
Classic plastic. Give it afternoon shade and an indoor winter and it will reward you.
Before you buy: Check the listed height, stake material, and number of birds in the package. Softer ground makes installation easier; dense soil may need a pilot hole.

Why do pink flamingo lawn ornaments fade?
UV light breaks down the pigment and the surface of the plastic. Pinks show it quickly, and heat speeds it up, so a bird in full afternoon sun fades fastest.
How do you keep plastic flamingos from fading?
Buy birds made of UV-resistant, color-molded plastic, give them afternoon shade, rotate them between sunny and shady spots, and store them indoors in the off-season.
Can you repaint a faded plastic flamingo?
Yes. Clean and dry it, use a spray paint made to bond with plastic in light coats, then finish with a clear UV-resistant topcoat.
